I delivered a seven week photography workshop as part of the Empower Her programme at Phipps Bridge Youth Club in Mitcham, working with a group of young girls over a series of sessions focused on confidence, identity and self-expression through analogue photography.

The project used photography as a tool to explore self-image, social media, and how young people see themselves and the world around them. From the outset, we focused on creating a safe and supportive space where the girls could express themselves freely and begin to think more critically about the images they see and create.

Throughout the sessions, the group learned to use analogue cameras and explored what makes an image meaningful. We discussed consent, privacy, and the responsibility that comes with taking and sharing photographs, alongside wider conversations about empowerment, role models, and sisterhood. Over time, the girls became more confident in their creative choices and more open in sharing their perspectives.

A key part of the project was writing letters to their future selves, reflecting on their hopes, achievements, and personal growth. This encouraged self-awareness and gave them space to articulate their thoughts in a personal and honest way.

The programme culminated in a public exhibition at Elys, where the young people helped curate the show, selecting and arranging their own work. On the opening night, they read their letters aloud to an audience, creating a powerful moment of reflection, pride, and confidence.

The project highlighted how creative spaces can support young people not only to build practical skills, but to strengthen their voice, identity, and sense of belonging.
